Intent

Computing is an integral part of our school curriculum due to the ever-changing digital world and the increasing importance of computing within our lives. Our computing curriculum is designed to provide children with the opportunities to successfully and accurately use technology, equipping them for a digital future.

Our curriculum design seeks to develop and strengthen their knowledge and skills as they progress throughout the school. We provide clear opportunities for the children to expand their understanding, ensuring that our curriculum is sequential. This structured approach enables pupils to build on their previous knowledge. We also place a significant emphasis on equipping children with the tools they need not only to understand complex concepts but also to apply that knowledge, offer informed explanations and identify connections and patterns within and across subjects. Online safety is a vital aspect of computing and is taught throughout all year groups to ensure children are continuously educated about online dangers that exist. 

Implementation

We are committed to teaching safe and respectful use of technology; online safety is at the heart of our computing curriculum, ensuring that all learners start with a foundation of staying safe online, supporting their progression in Information Technology and Computer Science. Throughout their time at Hoo, our children will become confident with using a range of technology, such as iPads, laptops and Beebots to engage with activities involving programming, coding, creating media and handling data. The use of Teach Computing and Discovery Coding are providing children with structured learning that meets every learning objective from the National Curriculum. 

Impact

Starting in year 1, children are being exposed to laptops which is allowing them to practice their keyboard and mouse skills, providing them with a foundation, which they can later apply to more challenging tasks in the future. Our computing curriculum provides children with full coverage, enabling them to become competent but also to develop an enjoyment for the different elements within this subject.

Teaching computing and computational thinking will actively develop our children’s problem solving, creative thinking and risk-taking, as well as logical and systematic thought processes. Our children will be developing the skills needed to succeed in a society where computing and use of technology is ever-growing and ever-changing.
