PE
Intent
Physical Education at Hoo St Werburgh Primary School intends to develop a fun, high-quality curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed, excel and make a positive impact on their own lifelong physical health and well-being.
We will provide opportunities for children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical activities so they become physically confident and enhance life-long participation through our PE enrichment activities across the school. Our children will also have opportunities to be competitive in sporting environments and take part in other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. We believe that Physical Education is an imperative element of the curriculum that develops a need for healthy lifestyles and a resilience to persevere with activities throughout life.
We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of a team, understanding fairness, sporting inclusivity and equality of play to embed life-long values.
Implementation
Hoo St Werburgh Primary School uses the National Curriculum (2014) framework as the basis for our PE curriculum. PE is taught in six half term sections, with two sports being taught in each half term. Children are taught PE for a minimum of two hours of high-quality PE each week (one session with a member of the sports team and one with the class teacher). The complete PE system is used to support the delivery of lesson plans and assessment for class teachers and the sports team. It provides high-quality lesson plans and examples, which show a progression of skills. Complete PE is also used as a curriculum mapping tool, to allow the teaching of PE to be appropriately managed, again to enhance progression of skills.
PE Enrichment
At Hoo St Werburgh Primary School, we offer the children a variety of PE enrichment. Children from years 1-6 engage with a different form of enrichment throughout the school year:
· Year 1 – Balance bikes
· Year 2 – MEAPA gymnastics
· Year 3 – Trampolining
· Year 4 – Swimming
· Year 5 – MEAPA gymnastics
· Year 6 – Chimera rock climbing
This helps meet the National Curriculum statement of allowing children to “develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.” It also provides children with exciting opportunities to develop a lifelong participation in sport.
Competition
Through the Howard School Sports Partnership, the children are provided with a chance to undertake competitive sports. The children have many opportunities to represent the school at Medway Mini Youth Games competitions as well as many, more inclusive, festivals in a range of sports. This allows the children to meet the competitive elements of the National Curriculum “engage in competitive sports and activities.” This also allows the children to represent the school and show our school values, fair play approach and inclusive ethos. The school have also entered a team into a local football league, allowing the children to partake in many fixtures against a variety of schools, as well as a football tournament at Gillingham Stadium, which will be a yearly occurrence.
After school provision
At Hoo St Werburgh Primary School, we offer a wide variety of sporting clubs for children from all year groups. Staff offer clubs across all half terms, including table tennis, hockey, KS1 gymnastics, football, basketball and many more. Outside agencies are also used to enhance the number of clubs on offer, including KS1 football, kickboxing and a number of dance clubs.
Swimming
At Hoo St Werburgh Primary School, children undertake swimming lessons in Year 4, to meet the National Curriculum requirements. All children in Year 4 partake in a block of 12 lessons and their abilities to complete a variety of strokes and water safety techniques are recorded. Any children that have not met all of the expected standards will have the opportunity to revisit swimming sessions when they are in Year 6.
Sports afternoons
Regular sports afternoons are planned for Years 1-6 to take part in. Trialled last year, the afternoons will allow children and staff to join in with a wide variety of sports that they may not have taken part in before. This will allow children to try something new and to work collaboratively with children from a number of year groups, helping to match the National Curriculum objective of “children should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other” and helps to “build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.” These sports afternoons are planned to be termly for the academic year 24-25.
Impact
Through exposing children to a wide range of sports and experiences, we are confident that they will find a sport they enjoy and will continue to take part in sporting activities in the future. Through understanding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, we are preparing our children to make positive life choices in the future to ensure they are keeping themselves active and healthy.
Attainment
Children at Hoo St Werburgh will develop their sporting skill and attainment as they progress through the year groups. The curriculum is designed to show progression across the year groups and key stages, building on skills taught previously. Attainment is measured through teacher assessment, through using the success criteria on the complete PE lesson plans and recorded on our tracking system. The subject lead will then use this data to identify trends and adjust teaching accordingly.
Competition
Hoo St Werburgh Primary School will submit a team into the cup and plate sections of every Mini Youth Games this academic year. This will allow us to pick a broader range and higher number of children to represent the school in a sporting capacity. We also aim to attend every festival that is offered and use these as a chance to offer opportunities to a wider range of children, including PPG, SEND and children who may not have been out of school before.
